Performance of sheet pile as a seismic retrofit for old piled abutment subjected to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading

چکیده

Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading causes severe damage to the pile foundation of structures. Old structures that are not properly designed for liquefaction more vulnerable a strong earthquake. Many old piled abutments require remedial measure against spreading. This paper examines responses an abutment subjected liquefaction-induced and efficacy sheet reinforcement technique mitigate associated through dynamic centrifuge experiments. The experiment on reveals moves together with soil shows significant channel-ward movement without pinning effect. large bending moments found take place around head interface loose dense layer as expected. installation in front considerably reduces thus moment demand piles.

Numerical modeling of liquefaction-induced lateral spreading

ABSTRACT: Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading of soils caused by strong shaking requires careful evaluation to be properly accounted for in geotechnical, and structural design of strategic infrastructure located in highly active seismic coastal regions. Although a large number of empirical and semiempirical models are available, there is still a lot of inconsistency in their predictions. In ...

Modified Sheet Pile Abutment for Low-Volume Road Bridge

Steel sheet piling, typically used for retaining structures in the United States, is a potential alternative for use as the primary component in low-volume road (LVR) bridge substructures. To investigate the viability of sheet pile abutments, a demonstration project was performed in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The project involved construction of a 40 ft single-span bridge utilizing axially loaded...

Seismic Retrofit of Pile Group Foundation with Thickened Caps

The case studied in the paper proves that thickening the pile cap is an effective seismic retrofit alternative to strengthen a pile group foundation. Unlike the typical seismic retrofitting of foundation, the proposed method eliminates the need to drive long piles into existing bridge substructures, substantially reducing cost, construction time and traffic interruption. The method thickens the...

Numerical Simulation of Piles Subjected To Lateral Spreading and Comparison with Shaking Table Results

Pile foundations are relatively vulnerable to lateral loads. During liquefaction-induced lateral spreading, this vulnerability is particularly conspicuous due to a loss of strength and stiffness in the liquefied soil. A nonlinear effective stress analysis incorporating an elastoplastic constitutive model based on Finite Difference Method (FLAC2D program) was used to numerically simulate shake t...

A comparative study on pile group and piled raft foundations (PRF) behavior under seismic loading

Study on the seismic behavior of piled rafts and pile groups while the same amount of construction material and excavation is used in their construction, are the main objective of this research. The process where the raft interaction with soil can affect the seismic response and stress distribution is also discussed in the current study. By means, ABAQUS software was applied for the finite elem...
